A crit is a random chance occurrence of an ability hitting and dealing more damage than normal. Crit chance is calculated using the agility stat of the caster and the target. Every magical and physical offensive ability can crit, besides AOE and abilities that hit more than once in one round, such as firewall and juggle, and smite which instead of critting, has the ability to instakill.
